    Our workforces are more diverse than ever. Teams are working across geography, generations, and cultures… From virtual spaces and varied mindsets.     In the US roughly 85% of individuals on the autism spectrum are either unemployed or underemployed. To combat this statistic, a movement of companies and organizations have been working together to help create more avenues for employment. Learn some of the benefits of neurodiversity in the workplace and some of the best practices in the field.


    Joseph Riddle is the director of the Neurodiversity in the Workplace program. In this role, he has led a team to design and partner in implementing hiring programs for neurodiverse individuals. Companies such as SAP and their Autism at Work program, Dell, and Bank of America have participated in hiring programs allowing the creation of a network of employers and talented individuals on the spectrum. These companies, with support from Joe and his team, are leading the way in demonstrating to the American workforce that neurodiverse talent is both valuable and productive. Utilizing experience in the corporate world along with a B.S. in Psychology and a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from George Washington University, he has spent the last few years advocating for systems change that will allow for easier transitions into meaningful employment for the autism community.

    It’s a question that keeps executives up at night and perplexes virtually everyone who has ever been in a managerial role: What actually develops leaders and prepares them for the challenges that lie ahead? There are scores of leadership training programs in the marketplace. Many of them teach excellent concepts and some deliver powerful experiences. But do they work? Do they improve leaders’ performance?

    Yes and no.

    Training is actually among the least effective ways to increase performance, especially leader effectiveness. Despite this common knowledge, companies commonly look to training as their first and sometimes only way to prepare people for leadership positions.

    Managers have responsibility for developing their people and for preparing their successors, but they are not trained as educators or developmental psychologists, so they are often ill-prepared for this responsibility. Additionally, managers are often so focused on “the work” that they don’t have time to nurture talent on their teams. Human resource professionals, who managers often look to for help, are often in a similar situation. HR generalists can be stretched so thin across multiple roles that they don’t acquire necessary leadership development expertise. HR specialists focus on unique disciplines, e.g., compensation, benefits, or recruiting. As a result, development is often outsourced to the training department. This is a regrettable, but common, practice. There are, however, other practical and effective solutions that keep managers in the “driver’s seat” and HR professionals in the backseat providing guidance and support.

    Michael Boyes is seasoned coach and consultant with 30 years of experience helping leaders grow personally and working with them to build healthy and productive teams in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. His career includes experience in large energy and medical systems as well as consulting firms serving a variety of industries, including: financial services, manufacturing, higher education, arts, professional services and the federal government. As a coach, Mr. Boyes serves all levels of leaders, from team leads to C-suite executives and is particularly skilled at bringing clarity to their dilemmas so they can make wise decisions.

    Over the course of his career Michael, has led virtually all types of talent management, performance management, and culture change initiatives in private, non-profit, and federal workplaces. In recent years his focus has turned toward strategic planning and senior leadership team development.

    Michael graduated from West Chester University with a B.A. in Psychology. In 1988, upon earning a M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Akron, he relocated to Baltimore, MD where he began a career as a consulting psychologist. Later in his career he became a certified coach and sat on the board of the MD Chapter of the International Coaching Federation.

    Michael Arena, VP Talent & Development for Amazon Web Services

    Michael Arena is the Vice President of Talent & Development at Amazon, where he is responsible for the global talent practices, leadership development and learning, organizational effectiveness, new employee success strategies and the organizational research activities to enable the growth and innovation for AWS.

    Prior to joining Amazon, Arena was the Chief Talent Officer for General Motors Corporation where he was responsible for enterprise talent management, cultural transformation, leadership development, talent acquisition and people analytics. While at GM he launched GM2020, a grass roots initiative designed to enable employees to positively disrupt the way they work, which was highlighted in Fast Company and Fortune Magazine. This initiative and others are highlighted in his best-selling book, Adaptive Space: How GM and Other Companies are Positively Disrupting Themselves and Transforming into Agile Organizations.

    His research on adaptation and networks won the 2017 Walker Prize from People + Strategy and has been cited in the Wall Street Journal, Inc. Magazine, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Harvard Business Review, and Sloan Management Review. Prior to GM, Arena spent two years as a visiting scientist with MIT’s Media Lab studying network theory. He also served as Senior Vice President of Leadership Development at Bank of America, where he co-designed and launched the Center for Future Banking, an initiative created to positively disrupt consumer banking.

    Arena is a faculty member in Penn’s Masters in Organizational Dynamics program and acts as a design thinking coach within the Stanford School. Dr. Arena earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Dynamics from the Union Institute and University.

    Bill is also the author of Courageous Leadership: Using Courage to Transform the Workplace.     Prior to founding Giant Leap Consulting, Bill was an executive in the change management and human performance practice at Accenture, a $35-billion-dollar management consulting firm. Bill became Accenture’s first fulltime internal executive coach, where he coached Accenture senior executives to become more courageous leaders.

    Bill’s first book, Right Risk, was published in 2003 and is about how to take smart risks. It draws on Bill’s experiences as both an organizational development professional and as a daredevil athlete. Bill is a former member of the U.S. High Diving Team. For seven years he traveled throughout the world performing with a team of high performing athletes. During that time, Bill did over 1500 high dives from heights that scaled to over 100 feet…sometimes on fire.

    Bill holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin (4.0) and attended West Virginia University on a full scholarship. He is currently the past chairman of Leadership Asheville, a community-based leadership program and served on the board of his local YMCA. Most importantly, he is the father of three beautiful children, Alex, Bina, and Ian.

    Bill’s newest book, The Leadership Killer, was released in October of 2018 and is co-authored with John R. Havlik, retired Navy SEAL.     In this interactive panel, attendees will gain perspectives from both sides as we discuss the latest legal developments in employment and labor law. The panel will include both an attorney from a management-side firm and a plaintiff/union-side firm, both of whom can share their perspectives on the implications of the latest legal developments and how HR professionals can stay proactive, compliant and knowledgeable. Attendees will learn practical tips from diverse experience to keep them ahead of the latest changes. The panel will be moderated by an attorney with in-house experience dealing with attorneys on both sides as well as HR professionals on a daily basis.

    Christina Michael, Esq. is a partner in the firm’s Philadelphia office whose practice includes both employment litigation and counseling. In her litigation practice, Christina handles a full range of employment related matters in court and administrative agencies, including cases involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wrongful discharge, whistleblower claims, wage and hour laws, and common law contract and tort claims. Christina has experience taking matters to jury trials, as well as arbitration proceedings, and has appeared before a variety of state and federal agencies. Christina also has represented employers at the appellate level, and has briefed appeals and writs in the United States Supreme Court, the Second Circuit, and the Third Circuit. Christina also dedicates a substantial portion of her practice to counseling employers as they address day-to-day employment law questions. She regularly advises employers on a wide variety of matters, such as the appropriate handling of disciplinary issues, employee terminations, compliance with employment laws and regulations dealing with harassment and discrimination, worker classification pursuant to wage and hour laws, background checks, disability and religious accommodations, creating and implementing employee handbooks and personnel policies, and handling of labor relations.     Lauren Hoye, Esq.advocates for labor unions and individual employees before state and federal courts around the country. She appears on behalf of clients in arbitrations, negotiations and administrative proceedings before relevant administrative agencies, including the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board (PLRB). A considerable portion of her practice is devoted to counseling and training on public and private sector labor law as well as employment law and employment disputes. She helps her clients by troubleshooting in urgent situations, developing creative solutions that will assist in resolving their issues and offering an empathetic ear during difficult times.
