Leading the Shift from HR to Employee Experience:

    How Airbnb's Mission and Values

Created Their Unique and Powerful Employee Brand

We are excited to share that Mark Levy, former Global Head of Employee Experience of Airbnb, will be joining us for our Q3 program on Thursday, September 6th. Mark will share the Airbnb journey, creating a seamless employee and consumer experience, deploying technology in ways that increase purpose and human connection.

Mark is a seasoned globally minded Employee Experience Leader who has chosen to work for big hearted companies and focus on how he and his team can unleash the talents and passions of a company’s employees. Early in his career, he worked with the likes of Best Buy, Levi Strauss & Company and Gap Inc. partnering with business leaders to support their HR needs including innovative ways to create a learning organization and ensure integration between work and life. Mark also spent two years living and working in Paris, France for Thomson/Technicolor.

Most recently, Mark was the pioneer of designing the Employee Experience at Airbnb, which has since created significant changes in the way organizations globally are looking at expanding the HR function to focus on the entire employee journey. This group included traditional HR functions, in addition to broader teams focused on social impact, culture and workplace. Mark helped to further Airbnb’s mission “to create a world where you can belong anywhere,” by establishing the employee experience mission that employee’s feel they belong at Airbnb. Glassdoor recognized Mark and his team’s work by naming them the #1 Place to Work in 2016.

Mark is now taking his learnings to consult with companies, from start ups to large global brands, to advise on how to evolve from HR to Employee Experience, how to create an integrated internal and external brand, how to bring the mission and values to life, and how to create a greater connection between the company and their employees, between employees, with the company’s customers, as well as the communities in which they operate.

When people ask why companies need a training department or team, what answer do you give? Can you articulate clearly and convincingly what role a trainer or instructional designer plays in an organization in 2018?

Let's face it - in the business world, training can seem like a luxury to many. And as we all know, when times get tough, training usually suffers one of the first blows as staff gets cut. So before the next economic downturn happens or your organization suffers a setback, why not invest time in your own career development and learn how to answer that first question with confidence?

If your job duties include words or phrases like “training,” “organizational,” “human resources,” or “performance,” you need to attend this event. Local expert Joe Willmore, fresh off a wave of global engagements with ATD, will guide participants through a one-day seminar on how to analyze and design for employee performance. Whether you’re new in the field or a grizzled veteran (or even if you lack grizzle), you’re sure to learn something surprising. We expect another big crowd for this event, so register today to ensure your seat!

Part one will focus on front-end analysis. With a very hands-on approach, you will learn to to identify and quantify business goals, assess performance, create objectives in measurable terms, and spot and fix performance gaps.

Part two will zoom in specifically on performance gaps and understanding top performers. This more detailed, focus session will give you guided practice in using the tools and techniques experts use to diagnose, remedy, and measure employees' work on the job. In addition, you will learn that the fastest way to improve performance is to identify exemplars/top performers, and also how to observe, measure, and interact with them so that their success can be translated into a formula that works for others.

Joe Willmore has over 35 years of experience as a performance consultant with his own practice serving a wide range of clients including: the World Bank, the US EPA, Wal-Mart, the Wilderness Society, NSA, CMAA, USAID, Lockheed-Martin, Under Armour, Amtrak, VIA Rail, Houston Texans, National Geographic Society, Washington Wizards, and the Washington Nationals.

Specialties: Performance Analysis and Diagnostics (front-end analysis), Training and Facilitation, Strategic Planning, Instructional Design, and Customer Service.

Which one of these did you want to be when you grew up?:

    • A instructional designer
    • An OD practitioner
    • A business consultant
    • An HR partner

We're going to guess option E - none of the above. A lot of people back their way into a job and a career. Our resumes may look neat and tidy, but our lives, and our careers, really are not.

If you find yourself at work wearing a hat that includes word or phrases like "training", "organizational", "human resources", "performance", and you don't have a formal background in instructional design or education, you belong at this event. Local expert Joe Willmore, fresh off of a wave of global engagements with ATD, will guide participants through a day long seminar on how to analyze and design for employee performance.

Part one will focus on front-end analysis. With a very hands-on approach, you will learn to to identify and quantify business goals, assess performance, create objectives in measurable terms, and spot and fix performance gaps.

Join L&D Philly and our partner - Theresa Hummel-Krallinger - for her monthly Meet the Author series this October. This month, Theresa features local business & training leader Peter Demarest to chat about his latest book - "Answering the Central Question".

    Description:

Breakthrough: “A significant shift in thinking that removes barriers, reveals possibilities, and leads to unprecedented results.”

When was the last time you experienced a breakthrough?

George Bernard Shaw wrote: “Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their thinking cannot change anything.”

In other words, breakthrough results require breakthrough thinking.

Our featured author for this evening, Peter Demarest, is the author of Answering The Central Question. He is a leading pioneer in the science and application of neuro-axiology (brain science + value science) and the co-founding president of Axiogenics, LLC.

Endorsing Peter’s book, Stephen R. Covey (of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People fame) wrote: “Every once in a while, a book comes along that fundamentally shifts our perspective of what life, love, and leadership are all about – it’s ALL about adding value! Based in the groundbreaking science of applied neuro-axiology, this book reveals the how-to principles for … creating a truly extraordinary life.”

If you want to create an extraordinary life or breakthrough results in any aspect of your life or work, there are three things you need to do:

    • Learn the basic principles of value dynamics
    • Adopt a “valuegenic” mindset
    • Develop the skills of Cognitive Self-Leadership

Touching on the science, but focusing on actionable principles and practices, Peter’s first goal for this evening is that attendees will experience “a significant shift in thinking that removes barriers, reveals possibilities, and leads to unprecedented results.” His second goal is to provide attendees with a set of three simple, but powerful, practices that they can put to immediate work in their daily life to help them produce those unprecedented results.

Whether you are looking to improve some aspect of own life or are an executive leader seeking to take your entire organization to new levels of performance, this promises to be an evening of extraordinary value.

Moment of Truth: Not all business professionals get access to unlimited budgets. Okay, no one really does. Somewhere, sometime, we all end up searching for a tool or resource to help us get the job done. Not all tools, though, bring the same value. And every job requires a different tool or toolkit. So where can we find the best free or low-cost resources to help us achieve our goals? Well, we could spend countless hours searching on the internet. Or posting in vein on LinkedIn. But wouldn't it be awesome to find things from our peers - to hear and see what others use when their budgets run dry?

Join the Learning & Development professionals for this one of a kind event in November. Open mic time! Bring your favorite tool(s) and get 5-7 minutes to talk about it in front of your peers, showcasing how it works and how it helps you claim "mission accomplished". Topics include:

    • Project Management Tools
    • Timelines
    • e-Learning Development Tools
    • Other development tools
    • Audio/Video editing
    • Text to speech tools
    • Stock - Photos, Video, Sound, etc -
    • Budget & project tracking
    • Other ideas?

Everyone who registers and wants to demo a product - please contact us at info@ldphilly.com We'll provide you with a rubric to follow so you stay within your allotted time and provide the most value to your peers as you demonstrate your wares.
