Partner Event - Philly SHRM - Understanding and Working with LGBTQ Individuals

Program Description:

The Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs’ presentation is a comprehensive and interactive workshop that teaches competency, language, and issues as they pertain to LGBTQ+ identities and intersectionality. Participants will engage in an empathy building activity, terminology (an “LGBTQ101”), learn about statistics that are specific to the work they do, barriers that the LGBTQ+ community faces when engaging with their work, and programming/policy suggestions as well as resources that can be utilized for further learning and support. Participants will learn;

  1. The appropriate terminology for the LGBTQ community and how to utilize it
  2. Barriers faced specifically by LGBTQ youth and families in the foster care system
  3. Best practices for engaging, including, and supporting LGBTQ youth in foster care
  4. How to recruit LGBTQ families and homes
  5. How to identify if a youth or family has experienced bias in the system
  6. Resources that support LGBTQ youth and families in Philadelphia


About the Speaker:

Evan Thornburg currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs for the Kenney Administration in Philadelphia PA and is a diversity expert specializing in policy development, program design, and comprehensive training on LGBTQ identities and intersectionality. Evan grew up between Philadelphia, PA and Houston, TX, receiving her BA in American Studies/Civilizations from Ursinus College. Evan has trained thousands of individuals and collaborated with hundreds of organizations and institutions over the last 13 years when it comes to inclusion, competency, advocacy, and proactive engagement of LGBTQ individuals, specifically LGBTQ folx of color, elders, and youth. Currently some of Evan’s more profound and exciting work is redesigning the mandated citywide anti-sexual harassment training program, implementing an LGBTQ Leadership Pipeline Program for Philadelphia, creating protections for LGBTQ elders in long term care, and providing LGBTQ competency trainings for Philadelphia City departments so they can make more inclusive work spaces for the 27,000 city workers they employ and the 1.6 million city residents they serve. Evan believes there’s never too much reading, coffee, or drawing that can be had or done in this world.
